Correct tyre pressure affects everything from fuel economy to braking distance. Here's why you should check it regularly and how to get it right.
Tyre pressure is one of the most overlooked aspects of vehicle maintenance, yet it has a huge impact on your safety, fuel costs, and tyre lifespan. Studies show that over a third of UK drivers are running on incorrectly inflated tyres at any given time.
The Dangers of Wrong Tyre Pressure
Underinflated tyres increase your stopping distance, use more fuel (up to 3% more), generate excess heat, and wear out faster on the edges. Overinflated tyres reduce grip, give a harsher ride, and cause uneven wear in the centre of the tread.
How to Check Your Tyre Pressure
- Find the recommended PSI — usually on a sticker inside the driver's door frame or in your owner's manual
- Check when tyres are cold (not driven for 2+ hours)
- Use a reliable digital gauge or visit a petrol station with an air machine
- Don't forget the spare tyre!
- Check at least once a month and before long journeys
TPMS: Your Dashboard Warning Light
Most cars built since 2014 have a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). If the TPMS warning light appears on your dashboard, don't ignore it — it means at least one tyre has significantly low pressure. Pull over safely and check your tyres.
At New Tyre Empire, we check and adjust your tyre pressure for free whenever you visit. It takes two minutes and could save you money and keep you safe.
